Bill Gates and wife Melinda Gates have announced a dissolution of their marriage after 27 good years of being together. The couple produced three children and business partnerships.
The two who are co-chairs and trustees of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation made this announcement on their official social media handles.
According to the release, they stated that, they will “continue to work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
Melinda wrote on her Facebook page that, “after a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”
“we continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.” She added.
The announcement did not reveal the exact cause of the divorce but we will follow up and produce updates as and when it is available.
Seven years after Melinda Gates joined Microsoft as a product manager, the couple married in 1994. When Bill Gates first invited her out, he asked if they could go out. “two weeks from tonight.”
“I have no idea what I’m doing two weeks from tonight,” Melinda Gates said. “You’re not spontaneous enough for me,” Bill Gates replied. He called her the next day after getting her phone number.
They have three children together, one of whom is a top-ranked equestrian show jumper in the country. Bill Gates also stated that each of the Gates children will receive $10 million, with the remainder of the Gates wealth going to charity.
Microsoft had a market capitalization of around $35 billion at the time the two met. Microsoft is also one of the most profitable firms in the world, with a market capitalization of over $2 trillion.
According to Forbes, Bill Gates’ net worth has increased to $124 billion from $98 billion in 2020. He is ranked fourth among the world’s billionaires by the publication.
Melinda Gates was named one of the most influential women in philanthropy by Forbes, ranking fifth on its “Power Women 2020” list. Melinda Gates has changed her Twitter handle to Melinda French Gates, which incorporates her maiden name.
The Gates have long stated that they want to use their money to help others, especially through the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation. They launched the foundation in 2000 and have since donated billions to causes such as global health, poverty reduction, and education.
Since the coronavirus pandemic started in March 2020, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed more than $250 million to coronavirus response efforts.
