Recall that, Jesus college of Cambridge University in the United Kingdom earlier announced a decision to return to Nigeria, a bronze cockerel which was part of the numerous artefacts looted by British forces during colonial era. The promise has been fulfilled as the Cockerel has finally been handed over to Nigeria.
According to plans, a ceremony was held at the University to grace the handing over. “We are indeed very pleased and commend Jesus College for taking this lead in making restitution for the plunder that occurred in Benin in 1897,” His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin, said.
He added that, “We truly hope that others will expedite the return of our artworks which in many cases are of religious importance to us.”
Reacting to the return, Sonita Alleyne an authority of Jesus College who deemed the event a “momentous occasion” said it is the “right thing to do.” Adding that, “this is the right thing to do out of respect for the unique heritage and history of this artefact.”
“Since we took the decision to return the bronze following the college’s Legacy of Slavery Working Party’s extensive research, many organisations have followed in our footsteps.” He further added.
Meanwhile, France is equally in the process of handing over a total of 26 out of the many looted treasures from the Benin kingdom.
