Gunshots have been heard at the presidential palace in Guinea Bissau where President Umaro Cissoko Embalo was said to be having a cabinet meeting. The presence of heavy armed men is bringing speculation of an attempted coup in Guinea Bissau. Reports from the media have stated that government officials are held hostage by heavily armed men.
At the moment, the current location of the president and the prime minister are unknown.
In the past 18 months, some countries in the West African region have been faced with coups. They include Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso.
Embalo became the president of Guinea Bissau after he won the presidential election in 2019.
From reports, two people are said to have been killed by the heavily armed men while the president and all the members of the government are held inside by the gun men.
In the light of the attempted coup, West African regional bloc, ECOWAS has vehemently condemned the coup as well as the series of coups taking place in West Africa. ECOWAS stated it held “the military responsible for the wellbeing of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and members of his government”.
