Ethiopia to commence power generation from the Grand Renaissance Dam

Government officials in Ethiopia have announced that from Sunday February 20th, 2022, the country will commence power generation from the mega-dam located on the Blue Nile, popularly called The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Multiple reports cited a local government official to have confirmed that, “tomorrow will be the first energy generation of the dam.”

The mega project considered the largest hydroelectric project on the continent costs about $4.2 billion. The facility is expected to generate about 5,000 megawatts of power.

The dam has drawn some criticism over the years due to its positioning. Several consultations have been made with calls from neighboring countries, Egypt and Sudan for proper consideration of the operation of the dam.
