Ghana commissions four security vessels, names them after local rivers

Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo has on Friday, 25th February 2022 commissioned four security vessels as part of plans to retool the armed forces to better protect the country.

According to the government, the vessels will among many other functions, provide security and other support services towards the oil and gas activities of offshore infrastructures.

The vessels were named after the major local rivers across the country. The names issued to the vessels are the Ghana Navy Ship Volta, Ghana Navy Ship Densu, Ghana Navy Ship Pra and Ghana Navy Ship Ankobra.

The ships have features including three caterpillar C32 main engines with speed capacity of 28 knots, external fire-fighting monitor with remote clutch and control, all round wheelhouse ballistic protection, 2 x 12.7 mm machine guns mounted forward and aft of each vessel.
