Haitian President, Jovenel Moise has been shot dead at his residence late Tuesday night by unknown gunmen. The news was made public by Dr Claude Joseph, the country’s interim Prime minister.
The statement from Dr. Claude Joseph added that the first lady, Martine Moise also sustained injuries in the Process and is currently hospitalized.
The Prime minister did not reveal the true identities of the assassins but stated that they are a commando group with “foreign elements.”
Dr. Claudia referred to the assassination as one which is a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act.”” He added that, “all measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the state and to protect the nation.”
The late President’s rule over a country with population of barely 11 million people was characterized by widespread protests mostly against economic hardships, insecurity among others.
Politically, President Jovenel Moise has faced numerous criticisms for what the opposition referred to as “autocracy” following his two years rule by decree crumbling the country’s parliament; a move critics considered a deliberate plan to extend his leadership.
