Madagascar foils assassination attempt on President Andry Rajoelina

 Security operatives in Madagascar  on Thursday  foiled an assassination  attempt on the  country’s President, Andry Rajoelina and other top officials. 

Briefing the media, the Minister of Public security, Rodellys Randrianariso revealed that Six people including two  French nationals were arrested in connection with the attempts. 

“According to all the investigations we have made, the people arrested are involved in the assassination attempt of the Head of State of Madagascar. The arrests followed all the norms. The arrests were not made by mercenaries but by the police,” the  Minister told journalists. 

“Six people were arrested. Among them, two Malagasy are bi-nationals, there is also a foreigner and the others are Malagasy,” he further  added.

Police sources  say they intervened to seize weapons on Tuesday after monitoring the  operations  of the assassins for months.

Another source close to government revealed that two assassination attempts have been plotted  in a single  month. During Celebration of  the country’s  Independence Day on June 26, the army leadership  announced they had foiled an assassination attempt on their boss, General Richard Ravalomanana, who is also Rajoelina’s right-hand man.

President Rajoelina,  seized power in March 2009 from Marc Ravalomanana with the backing of the military, and has since remained in power after winning  in an election in December, 2018.
