In 2016, Nakku Justine became a viral sensation after appearing on the Nigerian news site “Nigerian Camera”. She has now gone on to become a model. Ms. Nakku is said to be 30 years old and owns a profitable 6-acre farm in Kenya, where she produces dairy, cabbage, grains, carrots, and chicken, among other things.
A high rate of unemployment plagues Africa as a continent. However, Nakku has taken responsibility for herself in her native Kenya by choosing a profession many people in Africa despise.
Photographs of Justine working on the farm were quickly circulated on social media in 2016. Many people commented on her appearance as a beautiful young woman in a male-dominated or older women field.
Nakku Justine has shown many young people that farming is achievable regardless of appearance, gender, position, or background if you are prepared to put your ego aside, roll up your sleeves and prepare to get dirty.
Agriculture in Africa
Africa is ideally positioned to increase world food production by 60% by 2050 to feed the projected population. However, young people dislike doing what their parents do, yet this may be a major issue in agriculture. According to data, Only 2% of young individuals in higher education study agriculture in Africa. In addition, Africa has over half of the world’s undeveloped arable land, a large potential for improved agricultural production, and a rapidly growing population full of energy and creativity.
In many African countries, smallholder agriculture has played an essential part in the development of agriculture. According to African Development Bank 2010 research, in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania, smallholder farming accounts for about 75 percent of agricultural output and more than 75 percent of employment. However, smallholder farming’s productivity development has been hampered by weak institutions, limited access to markets, and limited access to finance. The availability of access to land, training to improve skills, and encouragement of technology use are all measures that will help to increase production.
