A credible local media outlet, The Punch has reported that, Nigerian federal government has taken measures to stop twitter from operating in Africa’s largest economy.
“The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria” the Punch said.
“This was announced on Friday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi.” the report further added.
The reason for the suspension is yet to be revealed by the government. However, many people believe that, the decision was triggered by the earlier issue the president had with the social media giant.
Twitter earlier deleted a post made by the official account of President Muhammadu Buhari. Responding to widespread attacks on public facilities in the South East, the president made the following comments in a post:
“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian civil war. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
Twitter found this comment offensive and a violation of its rules. The post was taken down accordingly. Do you think this could be a reason for the suspension?
