Nigerian activist, Sowore reportedly shot by the police during protest

A popular Nigerian activist and Publisher Omoyele Sowore, was reportedly shot by the police. The alleged shooting happened during a protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

The news was earlier confirmed by the official social media handle of the activist. “Just been shit (sic) by a police officer, ACP Atine at the Unity Fountain in Abuja…let the struggle continue even if they take my life.” He wrote.

Human Rights lawyer Femi Falana equally confirmed the incident. “Yes it is true, that’s the information reaching me. He (Sowore) was shot by the police,” Falana said, adding that, “I can’t tell what condition he is in now, because I am in Lagos and he is in Abuja.”

Some eyewitnesses told reporter that, the activist sustained the injury from a teargas canister which was fired by a police officer. A follow-up video showed a group of Protesters carrying him to the hospital for medical treatment.

The police has since denied shooting Sowore after the news went viral. Spokesperson for the Police in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariam Yusuf said “FCT Police Command wishes to debunk the viral message in some sections of the social media purporting that ‘Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female Assistant Commissioner of Police’ at the Unity Fountain.”

She added that, “police operatives professionally restored calm at the Unity Fountain following attempts by a group of protesters to incite public disturbance. The protesters, who went on the rampage, were resisted by police operatives in order to prevent them from causing a breakdown of law and order. There is no record of such incident as at the time of this release.”
