Nigerians demand for justice as police arrest a Lebanese hit-and-run driver in Lagos

A middle-aged Lebanese national identified as John Greg has been arrested by the Nigerian Police in Lagos over a hit and run incident in Victoria Island, Lagos. The suspect was said to have rammed into a road user named Miss Omotomi Akinsanya which left her with serious leg injuries. She is currently in a critical condition at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police spokesman who spoke on the issue had stated that the suspect did not only commit the offence of hit and run but he was also driving against the traffic in a reckless manner in a Toyota 4 Runner. 

Eyewitnesses had said the suspect had tried speeding off after hitting the victim down but was chased and caught by observers.

The case is still under investigation by the police although the suspect has been detained.

The incident has drawn lots of criticisms and condemnation from Nigerians who are seeking justice for Miss Akinsanya. Nigerians on social media are insisting that the Lebanese national must face the wrath of the law as opposed to many scenarios where foreigners get away with crimes in Africa.

According to a statement released by the police spokesman, “On May 4, 2022 at about 0745hrs, a middle-aged Lebanese by name John Greg ‘m’ drove a Toyota 4Runner recklessly and against traffic on Sanusi Fafunwa Road thereby hitting one Omotomi Akinsanya ‘f’ which resulted in serious injuries to her leg.”

“He sped off but was chased and arrested. Suspect in our custody. Vehicle impounded and in our station. Victim undergoing treatment at LASUTH. Victim’s family was duly informed. Embassy of Lebanon duly informed. Investigation ongoing.” The Lagos police spokesman further stated
