A petition initiated online which is calling for the resignation of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), registers close to a million signatures.
The petition which was initiated by one Osuka Yip argued that the W.H.O’s Director-General is incompetent to man the position of one of the United Nation’s biggest organizations.
With now more than 889,803 signatures, the petition is prepared to be addressed to the United Nations seeking Dr. Tedros’ resignation from the top job.
According to the arguments in the content of the petition, Tedros’ failure to conduct an independent investigation to verify the number of deaths and those infected within the Chinese provinces and also failure to make an early declaration of COVID-19 as global pandemic since January, stand out as the strongest proves of their arguments against him.
“We strongly think Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is not fit for his role as WHO Director-General. We call for [his] Immediate Resignation.” Part of the petition reads.
Tedros is from Ethiopia and the first African to head the World Health Organization since 2017.
Recent comments by President Donald Trump and the Deputy Prime Minister of Japan, both accused him of focusing more on China to the detriment of the entire world with Trump framing the term “China-centric” against the W.H.O. It has since denied the accusation amidst threats by US to cut its funding to the body.
Tedros has advised the US and all other governments to refrain from politicizing COVID-19. “If you don’t want many more body bags, you refrain from politicizing [COVID]” He said.
Last week, he revealed receiving numerous death threats and racist comments directed to him since the beginning of the pandemic. Despite these threats, He said in a rare outburst that, “I am proud to be black, proud of being Negro, I don’t care to be honest… even death threats. I don’t give a damn”
Many have already taken to social media to condemn the petition as a politically motivated move against the W.H.O’s chief.
Close to 80,000 people died as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic with more than 1 million infections across the globe. Whether or not the United Nation will address this petition remains a suspense.
However, a change in the leadership of the organization at this crucial moment of global health crises will undoubtedly affect the efforts gathered to fight this deadly coronavirus.
