Prince William slammed for saying Africa’s population growth is endangering wildlife

United Kingdom’s Prince William has faced public backlash after blaming Africa’s population once again for “endangering wildlife.” Whilst some critics say his position is “shallow,” without historical facts and professional considerations, others refer to the Duke who has three children and comes from a relatively large family as someone who lacks moral authority on the subject matter.

Speaking during the Tusk conservation awards held in London on Tuesday, the Prince said “Africa remains on the frontline of conservation, playing host to the most awe-inspiring diversity of flora and fauna.” adding that, “the increasing pressure on Africa’s wildlife and wild spaces as a result of human population presents a huge challenge for conservationists, as it does the world over.”

The recent comment is a re-echoed version of his 2017 Tusk Trust Ball speech in which he said that, “in my lifetime we have seen global wildlife populations decline by over half. Africa’s rapidly growing human population is predicted to more than double by 2050—a staggering increase of three and a half million people per month. There is no question that this increase puts wildlife and habitat under enormous pressure.”

His consistent position on Africa’s population as a factor which is solely responsible for wildlife has been heavily criticized by many. The United Kingdom by expert document is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. However, the Duke ignores that fact, deliberately or otherwise whilst commenting on such issues.

His recent comment has so far been met with public backlash from concerned Africans. A social scientist identified by twitter name as Adams Armstrong wrote in response that, “it would be helpful if Prince William paid attention in history. By far the greatest losses of wildlife in Africa occurred in the early 1900s when Europeans arrived with guns and hunted across the continent. To blame African civilians is to totally misunderstand African history”

Lecturer and researcher called Dr. John Njenga Karugia also wrote on twitter that, “Mr. William has no moral authority to say anything about Africa or about Africans and their lives. He should spend his time reading good history books and raising his many children and spending time with his very huge family spread out across the world. His opinion is sewage”

“Asia population density: 100 per square kilometer. Europe population density: 72.9 per square kilometer. Africa population density: 36.4 per square kilometer. Prince William, with two kids and another on the way: it is clear Africa are having too many children here,” Nadine Bachelor added. Read some of the tweets below:
