This 19-year old Nigerian kid builds an aircraft from scratch; flies it at exhibition

The practical scientific knowledge demonstrated by this young Nigerian kid during the maiden edition of a Science and Technology Festival held in the oil rich Bayelsa State on Friday, 5th of March 2021 is mind boggling.

Oghenero Rejoice, a 19-year old rural-based Nigerian who was one of the participants of this impactful event built a fully functioning unmanned aircraft, all by himself from scratch within a period of three months.

The young genius did not disappoint when given the opportunity by Bayelsa Expo, a non-profit organization to demonstrate the efficiency of his product. With the help of a remote control, He flew and landed the aircraft to the amazement of the organizers and observers alike.

Rejoice is a grade 12 student of state-owned Kaiama Grammar School based in a remote riverine community in Kolokuma Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The organizers were amazed at his excellence mainly because of the limited scientific resources available to students in public schools, especially those in the very remote communities.

In a short online interview, Mr. Michael Tarerefa, a key member of Bayelsa Expo, the organization which provided the platform for these kids to exhibit their scientific products told EyeGambia that, “He(Rejoice) built it by himself.” He added further that, “the aircraft presented at the expo is his 3rd design. This took him about 3 months to build.”

According to Michael, the vision of Bayelsa Expo which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental and non-political organization is to give young kids in the educationally disadvantaged but oil-rich Bayelsa State of Nigeria a platform to showcase their creativity and ingenuity in solving local problems using established scientific and engineering research methods. They aim among other things to inspire and mentor young Nigerians to succeed, lead and innovate in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields and beyond.

Their recently held Science and Technology Festival saw the exhibition of other amazing products by young kids from different parts of Bayelsa state; as a media outlet that is bent on projecting development-oriented initiatives, EYEGAMBIA will monitor the activities of this organization closely and bring to your notice, other initiatives of interest.
