American stand-up comedian and actor, David Webber Chappelle has come under criticism for comments made in his popular Netflix show themed ‘The Closer’. A teaming number of individuals and organized groups are mounting pressure on the streaming giant, Netflix to pull down the show.
According to the critics, Dave passed certain comments deemed transphobic in ‘The Closer’ which is currently airing on Netflix and is considered one of the most watched episodes in Chappelle’s Netflix show . In the show Dave said “they canceled JK Rowling – my God. Effectively, she said gender was a fact, the trans community got mad as shit, they started calling her a TERF(…I’m team Terf.” TERF is a made up acronym first coined in 2008 and it stands for Transgender-Exclusionary Radical Feminist.
He added that, “Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. This is a fact.” He said.
In a recent development, a group calling itself “The National Black Justice Coalition” has joined forces with the critics to demand that Netflix remove the show from its platform.
In a statement, David Johns who is the executive director of the group said “with 2021 on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States, the majority of whom are Black transgender people, Netflix should know better;” he added that, “Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately pull ‘The Closer’ from its platform and directly apologize to the transgender community.”
Johns further wrote that, “we do not condone violence against any members of our community and our feelings and existence as trans, queer, and non-binary/non-conforming people matter too…what’s being missed at this moment is the extreme rate at which Black trans women are murdered, annually. All of this to say, we should think and engage more critically so we can all get free.’
